Guri, promoted to the city status in 1986, is adjacent to Seoul to the East, Namyangju to the west, and Hanam to the South. It occupies an area of 33.29 square kilometer, which consists of 0.31% of Gyeonggi Province. As of July, 2007, the population of Guri is 196,181 with 72,519 households.

It has mild oceanic climate with a yearly average temperature of 12.0”É. The average in January is £­2.5”É, and the average in August is 25.4”É. The average amount of precipitation over the year is 1,427.7mm and the annual average relative humidity was 61%.

Guri-si is a beautiful riverside city. The Hangang River flows through the city, and Wangsukcheon and Jangja Lake Park are located in Guri. The city is proud of its naturally blessed scenery of mountains and rivers. Its residents live in harmony with nature in this garden city. It is a city of valuable historical significance with the Donggureung Tomb, ancient villages that contain the living memory of 500 years of Joseon Dynasty kings. Guri is the center of year-round cultural activities and is famous for its sweet tasting Korean pears.

In addition, this city is a crossroads for transportation. Many transportation routes cross in Guri-si. The Jungang Line Railway has recently re-opened along with the opening of Subway Line 8, Subway line 6 and the Gyeongchun Line. Seoul Beltway Expressway, the Gangbyeon Highway, the Gyeongchun National Highway, and National Highway No. 43 are all important transportation links located in Guri. This area is the heart of the northeastern commercial distribution zone. It has virtually limitless potential for becoming the hub city of new knowledge, technology, information and culture.

Against this backdrop, Guri aims to build the education and culture-oriented center in the eastern part of Seoul. It is striving to be the world-class city under the motto of ”°Spirit of Goguryeo, Guri City of Korea.”±
